Filmmaker Ranjith Sankar has shared his thoughts on Arun Matheswaran’s latest Tamil film ‘DC’. The ‘Passenger’ director compared it to Ram Gopal Varma’s cult classic ‘Satya’. The Malayalam filmmaker said that the Lokesh Kanagaraj starrer reminded him of the impact he felt after watching ‘Satya’ nearly three decades ago.
Ranjith Sankar recalls watching ‘Satya’
‘Satya’, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, is considered one of the most influential Indian gangster films. Ranjith Sankar recalled watching the film at Trivandrum Kripa nearly 30 years ago. He said the experience made him question whether he could ever make something that could have a similar impact.After watching DC, Sankar appeared to have a similar reaction. He took to social media to share his appreciation for the film and its filmmaking.“Almost 30 years back.. I watched Satya in Trivandrum Kripa.. And walked out.. Wondering if I can ever touch this medium.. And today, I saw DC,” Ranjith’s FB post read.
‘DC’ marks Lokesh Kanagaraj’s lead debut
‘DC’ marks a major change for Lokesh Kanagaraj, who steps into the role of a protagonist for the first time. The filmmaker is better known for directing successful Tamil films including ‘Vikram’, ‘Kaithi’, and ‘Leo’. The film also features Wamiqa Gabbi in a prominent role. Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, Avinash Raghudevan, Krish Dayal and Thalaivasal Vijay are part of the supporting cast.
Violence drives Devadas’ journey
Arun Matheswaran’s film uses violence as an important part of its storytelling. Wamiqa plays Chandra, a sex worker who becomes central to Devadas’ journey. Sanjana portrays Parvathy, the woman with whom Devadas finds a brief sense of emotional connection.
‘DC’ records strong Sunday growth
The film witnessed an improvement in its theatrical performance over the weekend. According to Sacnilk, DC earned Rs 9.55 crore net in India on Sunday. The film had collected Rs 7 crore on Saturday. Sunday therefore brought a 36.4% jump in India net earnings. The third-day collection came from 4,639 shows across the country.‘DC’ had opened with Rs 4.40 crore on Friday. Its earnings increased on the second day before recording another rise on Sunday. With the third-day figures added, ‘DC’ has collected Rs 20.95 crore net in India. Its India gross collection currently stands at Rs 24.11 crore. The film recorded an overall occupancy of 40.1% on Sunday. The Lokesh Kanagaraj starrer is surely another surprise hit from Tollywood this year, after ‘Blast’.
