Is a planet really dead?
In a birth chart, no planet is ever truly inactive.Each planet still symbolises aspects of life. Mars still displays action and courage. Venus still relates to relationships and values. Mercury still signifies communication and thinking.The question is how well that energy can perform. One way to assess this in Vedic astrology is by planetary Avasthas or stages of development. A planet can be called young, mature, old or Mrita, or dead-like.This system is not to be confused with modern Degree Theory, although both systems attach importance to the exact planetary degree.
How Degrees are used in Vedic Astrology
In one traditional system, each 30-degree zodiac sign is divided into five stages. In odd signs, planets tend to go from an infant state near the beginning of the sign to a Mrita state near the end.In even-numbered signs, the sequence is reversed. The middle degrees are often associated with greater maturity, as the planet is thought to be in its youthful or Yuva stage.Thus, a planet at the high degree of a sign may act differently than at the middle of the same sign.This is why two people can both have Venus in Virgo and yet handle relationships in completely different ways.
What Does It Mean When a Planet Is “Dead”?
Suppose a planet enters Mrita Avastha. It does not automatically spell failure in the department ruled by that planet. But it’s built in. It might take more intentional effort.Weak Mercury means difficulty expressing ideas clearly until communication skills are developed. A challenged Venus may bring lessons about self-worth, relationships or money choices. Saturn in such a state may at first make it appear difficult to take responsibility. But experience may slowly build the person’s capacity to bear pressure.The rest of the horoscope is always significant.
What is Modern Degree Theory Heading Toward?
In Modern Degree Theory, degrees are used differently. It implies that every degree has an additional zodiac symbolism. For example, some degrees are associated with Aries themes, some with Taurus, Gemini, etc.In this method, the degree gives another dimension to the planet.Venus in a chart can describe how someone approaches love and the exact degree of Venus can add themes of ambition, communication, security or independence.That doesn’t mean a degree makes a planet dead. That idea is from a different astrology system.
Why 0° and 29° Get So Much Coverage
Planets around 0° or 29° are noticed more easily because they are at the edge of a sign of the zodiac.A planet near 0° can seem to be coming into a new expression of the energy of that sign.In Western astrology, the 29th degree is known as the anaretic degree. It represents intensity, urgency, or finishing the lessons of a sign.We should not automatically label either degree as a negative one. A planet at 29° can actually be quite noticeable in a person’s personality or life.
Never Judge a Planet by Degree Alone
Degrees are important, but they’re only one piece of the chart. An astrologer should also look at the sign, house, conjunctions, aspects, Nakshatra, planetary strength, house ownership, Navamsa position and current Dasha.A planet apparently deficient in one technique may receive considerable help in another.The real value of degrees is not in deciding whether a planet is “good” or “dead”. It is knowing how mature, ready and developed that planetary energy may be – and how consciously you can learn to use it.
