When the ambitious film failed commercially, the Kapoor family faced severe financial difficulties. However, Raj Kapoor’s next film, ‘Bobby‘, reversed their fortunes and became one of Bollywood’s biggest success stories.

Raj Kapoor put studio and assets at stake

According to IANS, in 2018, Rishi Kapoor opened up about his father’s dedication to filmmaking. He revealed that Raj Kapoor had mortgaged RK Studios and all his assets to complete and release ‘Mera Naam Joker’. The film’s disappointing box office performance left the family in a financial crisis.Recalling those difficult days, Rishi said, “When Mera Naam Joker was about to release, our studio and all our assets were mortgaged to release that film, and the picture bombed. We were in severe problems. Then he made a film called Bobby with a new boy and new girl, which was a huge risk after seeing the failure of Mera Naam Joker. But it became a super hit, and that is when his friends and my uncles insisted him to buy a house.”

‘Bobby’ became a turning point

Following the failure of ‘Mera Naam Joker’, Raj Kapoor chose to cast two newcomers in ‘Bobby’. The film marked Rishi Kapoor’s debut as a leading man, while Dimple Kapadia made her Bollywood debut. At the time, backing two fresh faces after a major commercial setback was considered a bold gamble.The decision paid off spectacularly as ‘Bobby’ emerged as a blockbuster, helping Raj Kapoor recover financially and restore the family’s fortunes.
